Switchback Stairs are typically two flights of stairs (often of differing length) that run parallel, joined at the top of the lower flight and the bottom of the upper flight by a landing. The landing may also be partitioned into two square landings. Ideally there is a space between the two parallel flights to allow room for skirt boards, stair tread overhangs and clearance between bypassing handrails.
